BEHIND THE SCENES

Early morning in foreign territory, I quickly learn from the local dog walkers that “Mojn” is a passable greeting – a fond reference to Schleswig having been a part of the Danish Kingdom. I’m in Germany at the southwestern point of what marks the beginning (or ending) of Lillebælt. Straight east, I can vaguely see the shores of Ærø.

“This project is very much a contemplation of repetition. As I set up the camera again and again I experience a uniquely satisfying feeling. But today turns out differently when a cluster of bright white clouds creates a beautiful reflection in the small waves in front of me. I shoot a Polaroid. As I wait for it to develop, I load the film for the real shot … only to discover that the camera’s shutter has broken. It ends right there.”

A few weeks later, I returned to make the shot. Frustrating? Yes. But also a reminder that sometimes we are unwillingly pushed in another direction. I kind of like that.
